Founder Diaries: Going Back to My Old Uni

When I started Smoothie London as a university side hustle, I never imagined that one day I’d be invited back to speak on a Women in Business panel. But here I am, returning to my old stomping grounds at Exeter University, not as a student, but as a business owner sharing my journey.

From Uni Side Hustle to Full-Time Brand

Like many students, I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do after university. What I did know was that I had a passion for fashion and accessories, and I wanted to create something of my own. I launched Smoothie London, a jewelry brand specialiSing in high-quality, stylish earrings, while still juggling coursework and exams. Back then, it was just a fun project - I had no idea it would turn into a fast-growing business with thousands of customers.

Being invited back to speak on the International Women’s Month panel at Exeter’s Women in Business Society feels like a full-circle moment. I’ll be sharing my experience of:

  • Starting a business at university - the highs, the struggles, and why I think boredom is the best catalyst for creativity.

  • Being underestimated in a “female” industry - and why ambition shouldn’t be a dirty word for women.

  • Building a brand from social media - how I used TikTok to grow Smoothie London from a side hustle to a full-time company.

  • The biggest challenges I’ve faced as a founder - from self-doubt to cash flow to learning everything on the go.

  • Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs - because if I could start with no business experience and figure it out, so can you.

Why Representation Matters

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that women belong in business - not just as hobbyists, but as ambitious, profit-driven entrepreneurs. Too often, female-led businesses are expected to be passion projects, while the fastest-growing brands in “female” industries (beauty, wellness, fashion) are often still male-founded. I want to challenge that narrative. Women should feel empowered to chase success, make bold business decisions, and build brands that are as financially strong as they are creatively fulfilling.

If you’re thinking of starting a business, my biggest advice is this: start now. You don’t need a perfect plan or endless experience - you just need to begin.

Follow along on our socials for behind-the-scenes content from the panel event, and if you’re at Exeter, come say hi! 💕
